JACKSON HEIGHTS, Queens (PIX11) -- The countdown is on for heading back to school and local groups are making it easier for parents and kids to get their preparations done.
The grassroots organization Make the Road New York will distribute free school supplies on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. at their office located at 92-10 Roosevelt Ave. in Queens. Parents and kids will be able to grab bookbags, notebooks and pencils and take part in art activities during the event. Organizers will also share information on the non-for-profit's community centers, food pantries, legal services and English classes for parents.
The event is made possible through partnerships with local leaders and organizations like Emblem Health and the Hispanic Federation. It’s aimed at helping both longtime Queens families as well as new residents during a time when many are struggling to afford basic needs.
“Entering a new grade or a new school can be a challenging experience for any child; that’s why having all the needed school supplies is key to providing a sense of support and the best learning experience,” said Make the Road New York organizers.
Make the Road New York specializes in providing legal services, education, community organization, and policy reform. They operate five community centers in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and White Plains.
