A man who was deemed a ‘modern day miracle’ for waking up from a coma after 244 days was tragically struck dead by a truck seven years later.
Drew Kohn suffered a motorcycle crash days before his 23rd birthday in July 2017 in Jacksonville, Florida, according to a GoFundMe page.
‘Doctors thought he was brain dead and would never walk or talk again, but through faith and the power of prayer he emerged from a coma after 244 days and lived life to the fullest,’ states the page.
Kohn had sustained a traumatic brain injury, two impaled lungs, a broken shoulder and hurt his ribs and pelvis. He was wearing a helmet, which was knocked off along with his shoes due to the impact of the crash.
Despite what doctors believed, Kohn’s mother, Yolanda Osborne-Kohn, never gave up on her son.
‘They would have harvested his organs,’ Osborne-Kohn told First Coast News.
‘It was because of my faith that gave me the boldness to speak up and push back and let them know, “You’re not getting a toenail or an eyelash.”‘
After five months, Kohn was discharged from the hospital to his home, where his mom continued praying for him.
When he suddenly woke up, he uttered the words: ‘Yeah mom, I’m OK. I love you, mom.’
On Friday, just over seven years after waking up and days before his 30th birthday, Kohn was walking when he was run over by a pickup truck on Collins Road.
Kohn was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘Drew is healed, walking, not struggling to keep his balance,’ his heartbroken mother told the news outlet.
‘His arm is probably lifted so high saying “Thank you, Jesus!” Drew probably has a football in one hand and a Bible in the other.’
The truck driver said he did not see Kohn and stopped and called 911 and cooperated with authorities, stated the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The GoFundMe page had raised more than $12,000 as of Wednesday evening.
‘While we miss him more than words can express,’ states the page, ‘We are at peace knowing he is finally home.’
