From pooing on the grass to digging up your flower beds, it safe to say that cats can leave us pulling our hair out, especially in summertime when we want to make the most of the warm weather by planning BBQs and garden parties.

You may try to get rid of them by banging on the windows, or by shouting at them, but the best method is to deter them from ever entering the garden in the first place.

Gardening experts at PlantIn recommended using a two ingredient spray to the pets away.

The experts revealed that cats hate the scent of vinegar and “will avoid your garden at all costs”, when smelling it.

Vinegar is super cheap, and you can pick it up from Tesco for 35p.

To make the spray, simply mix equal parts of vinegar and water, and pout the mixture into a spray bottle.

Spray the solution on the side of plant pots, or lightly missed the leaves, to keep cats away.

However, make sure not to spray too much vinegar on the plants themselves, as this can harm them.

Another method is to mix 60ml of water with two drops of essential oils such as citrus, rosemary or lavender.

The experts warned: “Don’t go heavy on the oils, as they are quite concentrated and might harm cats when used excessively.

“Spray your plants with the mixture.”

These are all smells that cats hate, so this will work in the same way as the vinegar.

Cats also hate the smell of citronella so you can also use this oil aswell.

An added bonus is that it is also an insect repellent, so keeps away bugs.

Tips for keeping pests from your garden

  • Plant companion plants such as peppermint to repel rats.
  • Place Garden Netting Pest Barrier, over your flowerbeds.
  • Fill open-top containers with beer and place in soil to repel slugs.
  • Spray plants with Neem Oil, to repel ants, flies, and spiders.
  • Dust your flowerbeds with Diatomaceous Earth.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap, 10 drops peppermint oil, and 4 cups water and spray on flowerbeds.
  • Place eggshells around your plants to protect from slugs and snails.

And if you don’t want to use the sprays, there are also a number of plants that you can grow in your garden, that cats hate.

Lavender, lemongrass, geraniums, roses, and curry herb plants are all examples of this.
