In announcing her August book club pick, Reese Witherspoon proved she couldn’t wait any longer. Instead of sharing her pick with her fans on the first Tuesday of the month, Witherspoon shared her August pick a week earlier today!
“I just finished the best book,” Witherspoon said in her announcement on Instagram “It’s all about this couple – ugh, it makes me so nostalgic for high school – they were best friends, but they didn’t know they were in love with each other.”
Years later, the protagonists, Shiloh and Cary, meet again. “They meet again at a friend’s wedding,” The Morning Show star detailed. “They’re 33 now, he’s in the navy, she’s recently divorced. It’s just so charming and beautiful and funny.”
The novel, which was officially released today on July 30, marked Witherspoon’s 99th pick of her book club. “I am just blown away, I can’t believe it,” she said of the milestone.
“Slow Dance is the story of two kids who fell in love before they knew enough about love to recognize it,” the description reads of their characters’ undeniable connection. “Two friends who lost everything. Two adults who just feel lost.”
“It’s the story of Shiloh and Cary, who everyone thought would end up together, trying to find their way back to the start,” the description ended.
In the few reviews on Amazon already, readers are raving over Rowell’s story. “This is very much a ‘right person, wrong time’ love story, so expect some heartache before the swoon,” wrote one reviewer.
“Shiloh and Cary are two perfectly imperfect people who are doing the best they can given their circumstances and place in life,” the review continued. “They don’t always make the right decisions and aren’t always that likable. They’re trying though – to do their best, to care for the ones they love, and to find their way. I appreciated that they took the time to nurture their friendship as adults and that there was no third-act breakup (though there is a lot of drama externally). The ending had me smiling so wide and Rainbow Rowell truly is such a gifted storyteller.”
“Romantic, funny, angsty,” wrote another early reviewer. “There was a lot I loved about this. Most of all, I loved Cary. Rowell can always write romantic heroes that capture my heart.”
