PARIS (WCMH) -- Team USA women's gymnastics is back on the top spot of the Olympic podium as they took gold in the team event in Paris in commanding fashion.
Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, and Jade Carey led the team to the victory and its third gold at the last four Olympics. The gold medal on Tuesday gives Biles her fifth at the Olympics and her eighth medal. Italy claimed silver while Brazil took home the bronze.
The Americans got off to a very strong start on the vault as Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Simone Biles scored big on their routines to open an early lead. It was a similar story on the uneven bars with solids scores again from Chiles and Biles with Suni Lee scoring a a team-leading 14.566 on her first routine.
Halfway through, Team USA had a massive three-point advantage over the Italians heading into the balance beam. After an early fall from Chiles on the beam, Lee and Biles closed out the penultimate rotation to give the Americans a commanding 3.6-point lead over Italy.
They ended the meet with phenomenal floor exercise performances from Lee, Chiles, and Biles to secure the gold by a whopping 5.8-point margin.
Gymnastics action is not stopping in Paris as Fred Richard and Paul Juda compete in the men's all-around final Wednesday afternoon on NBC4. Biles and Lee go head-to-head in the women's all-around final on Thursday on NBC4.
