Trump invite causes National Association of Black Journalists event co-chair to resign

A day after it was revealed that former President Donald Trump would be speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists' Chicago convention, one of the event's co-chairs has resigned in protest.

Writing on Twitter, journalist Karen Attiah revealed that she was stepping down from her post at the NABJ, although she still planned to attend the organization's conference next month.

"I have decided to step down as co- chair from this year’s NABJ24 convention in Chicago," she wrote. "To the journalists interviewing Trump, I wish them the best of luck. For everyone else, I’m looking forward to meeting and reconnecting with all of you in the Windy City."

In a follow-up post, Attiah added that her decision was " influenced by a variety of factors," but she emphasized that "I was not involved or consulted with in any way with the decision to platform Trump in such a format."

Trump announced on Monday that he would be attending the convention and would engage in a panel discussion about "the most pressing issues facing the Black community."

The event is set to be moderated by ABC News' Rachel Scott, Fox News host Harris Faulkner, and Semafor political reporter Kadia Goba.

Trump has drawn widespread criticism from Black Americans over the years for engaging in egregious race-baiting, including when he told four Congresswomen of color to "go back" to their home countries despite the fact that all of them are American citizens; calling for the death penalty for five Black teens who were falsely accused of raping a woman in Central Park in the 1980s; and describing the Black-majority city of Baltimore as a "rat and rodent infested mess."
