GLENVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A mural to showcase school pride within the community is complete. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the artwork is scheduled for August 3 at 9 a.m. at the Adirondack Beverages building, 804 Corporation Park, across the street from the Scotia-Glenville Middle School.
In the beginning of July, a committee of residents announced the painting had begun. The mural will overlook the district's Craig T. Hitchcock Football Field, featuring a large image of the school's mascot, Wallace the Tartan.
"I am grateful for the support of our Scotia Glenville community and our sponsors," District Superintendent Susan Swartz said in a statement. "Completion of this mural demonstrates what happens when a coalition of like-minded people pull together to make something happen."
In a multi-year planning process, support and sponsorship came from the Village of Scotia, the Town of Glenville, Adirondack Beverages and Champlain Hudson Power Express.
"To me the mural represents the spirit of the Scotia-Glenville School District and the people it represents," Scotia Mayor David Bucciferro said in a statement. "It is another example of a pride-filled community that we call home and the people who are willing to take an idea and make it a reality. It represents perseverance and the culmination of the hard work of dedicated people and how things that seem impossible can indeed happen. As a past president of the School Board and current Mayor of Scotia, I am thankful to everyone who made this happen and I proud to say I am a Tartan."
"It could have been so much easier for fans to sit in the stands and just complain about the appearance of a deteriorating building in the background, but what a tremendous example for students of the district to be able to see what can happen when someone takes an action to make something around them better," said Joseph LoDestro, the Vice President of Polar and Adirondack Beverage.
The ribbon cutting will include remarks from organizers and supporters. Scotia-Glenville School District alum Cameron Breslin will also be performing music on bagpipes.
