ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A new report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli looks at the condition of local bridges throughout New York. The report found that although the state as a whole has seen an improvement in the condition of local bridges, many are still in poor condition.
"Ensuring safe and reliable public infrastructure is an ongoing concern for local governments across the country,” said DiNapoli. “Despite increased funding from the federal and state governments, there is a great deal more work that needs to be done in New York. Local governments need this funding to continue so sorely needed repairs and maintenance are completed."
Local governments own about 50.6% or 8,891 of New York's bridges, with the state owning the rest. According to 2023 data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, 10% of local bridges throughout the state were rated in poor condition, down from 12.1% in 2017.
According to the report, the Mid-Hudson Valley had the greatest amount of local bridges in poor condition at 13.9%. The only county in the Capital Region (and the state) to have no local bridges in poor condition was Schenectady County. Locally, Columbia County had the highest amount of bridges in poor condition.
For the Capital Region, almost 37% of local bridges are in good condition, while 49.5% are fair and 13.7% are in poor condition (the second highest). The Federal Highway Administration reports about $700 million is needed in improvement costs for these local bridges.
New York State requires that all bridges are be inspected every two years. When the Department of Transportation inspects a bridge, it's rated from zero (worst) to nine (best) based on how the major bridge components can carry vehicle traffic. If a bridge gets a score of four or below, it's rated poor.
