SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- One of the most anticipated races of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course - the Whitney Stakes - makes its return on Saturday. A 12-horse field is set to compete in this $1 million, Grade 1 race for four-year-olds and upward, and was announced Sunday.
No odds have been released yet; only post positions. But the heaviest hitters in the field are positioned in posts one through four.
Out of the one is Post Time. He's won eight of 11 career starts. The two, Disarm, finished second in last year's Travers Stakes. The likely favorite will be 2023 Preakness winner National Treasure, running out of the three-post. Then there's the four, Warrior Johny.
At the five is First Mission. Il Miracolo will be sixth. Then comes the first of a trio of horses entered for trainer Todd Pletcher: the seven-horse, Crupi. Five-year-old Tumbarumba draws post eight.
Breaking out of post nine is another Pletcher-trained horse - Bright Future. Trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr's Skippylongstocking will occupy post 10. Arthur's Ride - in his first career stakes race - starts from post 11. And rounding out the field is Charge It. He finished fourth for Pletcher in last year's Whitney.
