Serie A outfit Como have signed former Manchester United star Raphael Varane.
The 31-year-old has penned a two-year contract with the newly promoted Italian club. They also have the option to extend it by another 12 months.
The move will see the experienced defender join forces with former Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas who was appointed as Como’s head coach in July.
Fabregas said: “Raphael is a special player and his signing is proof of the ambition we have for this club.
“He has won so much in his career and the experience he has gained in two of the best leagues in the world cannot be underestimated. I can’t wait to start working with him.”
Varane joined United in 2021 after a hugely successful stint at Real Madrid.
The Frenchman was excellent in defence for the Premier League giants and received praise for his exceptional positional and awareness play.
He made 95 appearances across all competitions at Old Trafford and helped them win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
However, he sustained 11 injuries with United and missed multiple matches. He was also one of the highest earners with a weekly wage of £340,000 (per Spotrac).
The Red Devils made the right decision to not renew his contract and bring in Leny Yoro as his replacement.
Yoro is a younger defender who is more comfortable on the ball. The 18-year-old also likes to contribute offensively in addition to his defensive duties, having scored three goals last season.
He picked up an injury against Arsenal in their recent pre-season friendly but was excellent on his non-competitive debut against Rangers.
