Cypriot judoka Sofia Asvesta qualified on Sunday for the round of 16 after beating Soumiya Iraoui from Morocco in a first round match in the -52kg category of the judo tournament at the Olympic Games in Paris.
Asvesta qualified after winning 1-0 with a brace at a crucial point. With this victory, she secured the 9th place in the Olympic Games. In the round of 16, she will face Amandine Bouchard of France.
Cyprus’ Presiden Nikos Christodoulides, First Lady Filippa Karsera Christodoulides, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, all watched the effort of Sofia Asvesta from up close, along with the Ambassador of Cyprus to France, Pavlos Kombos, the President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgios Chrysostomou, the General Secretary of the Committee, Andreas Georgiou and the Head of Mission, Yiotis Ioannides.
In his post on X platform, Christodoulides congratulated Asvesta for qualifying to the “16”.
