With the Paris 2024 Olympics basketball set to start this weekend, despite no GB team presence, every UK hoops fan is wondering where to watch the basketball from the UK.
Tipping off on Saturday 27th July, 12 of the best teams in the world are split into 3 groups, with the top 2 set to advance from each pool, along with the two best third-placed teams to set up the quarter-finals.
On the men’s side the groups look like this:
Group A: Australia, Greece, Canada, Spain
Group B: France, Germany, Japan, Brazil
Group C: Serbia, South Sudan, Puerto Rico, United States
On the women’s side, the groups are as follows;
Group A: Serbia, Spain, People’s Republic of China, Puerto Rico.
Group B: Canada, Nigeria, Australia, France.
Group C: Germany, United States, Japan, Belgium.
The key dates are as follows:
Group stage: Saturday 27 July to August 3
Quarterfinals: August 6
Semifinals: August 8
Bronze medal game: August 10
Gold medal game: August 10
The official Olympics website points to three broadcasters with the rights, all via Warner Brothers Discovery; Eurosport, Discovery+ and BBC iPlayer.
BBC One and BBC Two will broadcast over 250 hours of live coverage across the entire 16-day event; whilst Olympics Extra, a second curated live stream on BBC iPlayer, will aim to have all the key moments, however, there is not a clear advance schedule on what they will actually be covering during their broadcast times. You can check this page to see the schedule each day, and we can see on the opening day, and true to form, there is no basketball coverage.
Therefore, the best option is Eurosport, which will be shown on their broadcast channel, the Eurosport app and discovery+ – which will cost just £3.99 for the duration of the Olympics (goes up to £6.99 a month after).
Eurosport will feature the basketball in its entirety.
And if you are looking for a team to adopt – try South Sudan. Former GB superstar Luol Deng is now the president of the federation, with a number of Brits or people with ties to the UK involved in and around the team, including Steve Vear who manages all of the operations.
