Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King, who TMZ has lovingly christened “Gaylah/Kinfrey,” are addressing long-standing rumors about the nature of their relationship. In a sit-down interview on Melinda French Gates’s new series, Moments That Make Us, the two women explained, yet again, that they are just friends. “You know, for years, people used to say we were gay, and listen, we were up against that forever,” Winfrey said. “And people still may think it.”
The 70-year-old titan of talk shows is convinced everyone thinks they’re lesbians because they share a close “truth bond” that’s rare within friendships. I get that! And, honestly, I think I’d rather have one lifetime “truth bond” with a platonic friend than a ten-year dud of a marriage with a man. King, however, joked that she used to beg Winfrey to tell the public that they were not-so-great friends for damage control: The rumors were so rampant back in the day that she couldn’t get men to go out with her. “I used to say, ‘Oprah, you gotta do a show on this, because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday night with people thinking we’re gay,’” she told French Gates. “Because if we were gay, we’d tell you!”
Well, let that be the final word on the Gaylah conspiracy front. No more asking Winfrey if she’s “swum in the lady pond” (as Andy Cohen once phrased it in 2013; he has since said he really regrets it). Unless you’re a billionaire with a penchant for philanthropy. Apparently, then, the rules don’t apply.
