Kailyn Haig pitched a complete game in Great Britain's 8-1 five-inning win over Colombia in the second game of the day on Thursday at the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup Group A at Estádio Municipal de Beisebol Mie Nishi in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
After a scoreless first inning, Great Britain scored in eachof the next four innings, including the walk-off run in the bottom of the fifthto reach the seven-run lead. Seven of the nine British players in the lineuphit safely, tallying 10 total hits. Leadoff hitter Jessica Chan and designatedplayer Sydney Teague each connected for a pair of hits, with Cara Edwardscollecting two RBIs.
In the bottom of the second, Teague hit a triple to the left field corner and scored the first run of the game on a stolen base play. Kaitlyn Parisi scored the second run on a defensive error, giving the European team a 2-0 lead.
Great Britain doubled their lead in the bottom of the thirdwith back-to-back RBI singles by Teague and Kaitlyn Parisi. A two-run double byEdwards and a run-scoring double from Mia Krueger in the fourth inning extendedtheir lead to 7-0.
Colombia kept the game alive by scoring one run in the topof the fifth to avoid a run-ahead loss. Jazmin Mejia hit a clutch two-outdouble to drive in Francela Verdura, making the score 7-1. However, GreatBritain sealed the victory in the bottom of the fifth when Lily Bell scored ona throwing error by centre fielder Brooke Zuluaga, ending the game at 8-1.
