PETROLHEADS can pick up an iconic hot hatchback for a bargain price – and it matches the speed of a Ferrari.
The evergreen Volkswagen Golf TSI R is widely considered one of the most dramatic hot hatchbacks around, picking up from the iconic GTI that has been a consistent source of cheap thrills for drivers since 1976.
Petrolheads can pay less than £8,000 for a second hand example[/caption]But while the current Golf TSI R – the Mk8 – has a starting price of £44,605, car fans can find the Mk6 model for a pinch.
The sixth-gen Golf R, which was built between 2010 and 2012, can be found for less than £8,000 – despite boasting a top speed of 155mph.
To put that into some context, the Ferrari 308 GT4, one of the powerhouses of the late 1970s, can hit 154mph and set you back around £60,000.
Better yet, the Golf R offers plenty of practicality to go with its performance.
For motorheads looking for something on a budget, we were able to find a lovely example of a Golf 2.0 TSI R on the Motors website for just £7,995.
The black hot hatch, complete with 18-inch alloy wheels, is from 2010 and comes with plenty of useful tech such as headlight washers and heated door mirrors.
It looks the part too, with a sporty rear spoiler and Golf R stylings across its exterior.
This example has 102,000 miles on the clock, and has an MOT that runs out in June 2025.
Sun Motors supremo Rob Gill celebrated the Golf’s 50th birthday earlier this year – as Volkswagen’s CEO assured fans the model has a strong future.
This comes as a top car brand has revealed it “has not held back on performance” with its own hot hatchback that was released today – with a top speed of 142mph.
Elsewhere, Wheeler Dealers’ host Mike Brewer urged drivers to seek out a recently discontinued hot hatch that he claims will be a “future classic”.
