Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson reflected on signing an extension with New England through 2028 after the first day of training camp at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.
“I was glad. I really didn’t want that on my shoulders going into the season,” Stevenson told reporters, per team-provided video. “I’m glad my agent and the GM got that done. I’m glad to be a Patriot for five more years.”
The running back’s rookie contract closed during the gap between minicamp and training camp, but the two sides were able to reach an agreement in June.
“It’s a relief because I didn’t want that stress on my last year,” Stevenson admitted. “Now, I’m just playing ball.”
Stevenson said the four-year deal showed meant a lot to him.
“They trust me. They believe in me, and that gives me more confidence,” he said. “Just know the work that I’ve been putting in has been paying off.
Entering his fourth season with New England, Stevenson has 14 rushing touchdowns and 2,265 yards on 499 carries. He put up a career-high 1,040 yards in 2022.
His extension in the offseason was one of several teammates to re-sign with the Patriots, including Christian Barmore, Mike Onwenu, Kyle Dugger, Joshua Uche and Jahlani Tavai.
“It makes us all work harder,” Stevenson said. “I don’t want to speak for anybody, but playing for the Patriots, it’s a great organization. I wouldn’t imagine anyone wanting to leave, so it gives people hope that they could continue their career here.”
Stevenson and Patriots fans saw rookie quarterback Drake Maye in action during Day 1 of camp. The 26-year-old Oklahoma product said he was excited to see the highlight-reel play between Maye and Jalen Reagor, and the team has confidence in its future.
