OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — There was a frustrating find for a family renting out a unit at a storage facility. Someone had rummaged through and stolen some of their belongings. They described it something straight out of a cartoon.
"I got a phone call at work, and it was a storage company telling me that my lock had been cut and that somebody had gone through my storage unit," said Misty Leyva, a victim of storage unit theft.
When Misty Leyva got to the unit on Northwest Expressway, she said a lot of her family's personal items were thrown outside the unit.
She also said before the break-in, the unit was organized, but now it's a mess.
"I had tools in a certain area and all of the girls toys in a certain area. I mean, like even my patio chairs I had; they were just, tossed around," said Leyva.
Leyva said there's something bizarre about the break-in.
"I noticed like there was a hole in the side of our unit going into the next unit," said Leyva.
The hole was big enough for someone to walk through.
"Makes me wonder if they picked up one of the tools, you know, and hit that hole out," said Leyva.
Leyva said a lot of her husband's tools were stolen along with a portable AC unit, some TV's, and her nieces bicycle.
A dryer they had was also broken inside the unit.
"Just what was done to our personal stuff. You just feel violated, you know," said Leyva.
Leyva said she filed a police report and saw officers taking fingerprints where they could.
She also talked to management at the property.
"I asked about cameras and they said there weren't cameras all the way in the back," said Leyva.
Leyva said she looked online and saw some reviews citing similar problems at the storage unit.
Now, she wants to know who did this and hopes she can warn others to be cautious in the future.
News 4 reached out to the storage unit owners, but did not get a response back.
