Newborn photoshoots typically portray angelic sleeping babies and flawlessly made-up moms. But what they don’t show is the reality of postpartum life — which isn’t always picture-perfect. That’s why people are loving Jenna Dewan’s new home photos with her baby girl Rhiannon, who was born last month. From baby snuggles to leaky breastmilk, these pictures are keeping it real.
“Baby bliss with a side of mastitis,” the Step Up star captioned the post. Even from the caption, Dewan is relaying the complexity of newborn life. (If you’ve ever had mastitis, it is one of the most painful and common complications of breastfeeding.) In the accompanying photos, we can feel her struggles and her love.
The dancer wears a black one-piece swimsuit in the first picture, as she takes a mirror selfie giving her baby girl a kiss. She smiles with husband Steve Kazee in the next photo, who has Rhiannon wrapped up to his chest in a baby wrap. Her shirt is unbuttoned, revealing a blue bandage on her chest. Another picture shows her relaxing outside with her dogs, feet propped up on an ottoman while a nursing pillow sits next to her. She also shared sweet photos of her kids Callum, 4, with Kazee, and Everly, 11, who she shares with ex-husband Channing Tatum.
Slide 5 is one of the most relatable. Dewan lies out flat with her baby girl cuddled on her chest. A nursing pillow is unbuttoned around her waist, and a diaper is resting next to her on a pillow. Dewan wears a nursing bra for this picture, stained with breastmilk. Basically, all my bras and shirts were stained with breastmilk when I had newborns, so this is so relatable.
“Picture 5 with the dried up breastmilk on your bra is literally the epitome of newborn mom life!” one person commented. Someone else wrote, “Love how real you are Queen ???? the slide with the milk stains ???? totally feel that girl.”
“The 5th picture is the most real photo ????” another person said.
Dewan has shared several photos with her baby girl lately. Earlier this month, she wrote, “Postpartum is truly a vibe” on a set of photos of her lying in bed with her newborn, dogs, and a mini bar converted into a changing table.
“It’s been a snuggle summer so far,” Dewan wrote over more pictures, this time showing several snaps of the family snuggling, including one with Everly acting like the best big sister and holding her baby sis.
Dewan has professional photos with her baby too (they are gorgeous!), but we are obsessed with these stripped down, intimate pictures of mom life. She’s making the most of it — mastitis and all — and it’s refreshing to see.
