The USA Men’s Basketball team began their path to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on July 10 and completed the five-game pre-Olympics exhibition undefeated.
In the five games played in Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi and London, USA outscored its opponents 482-431.
George Balekji and Ountae Campbell discussed which NBA superstar has been the MVP of the USA team on the latest episode of NESN’s “Hold My Banner.”
Without hesitation, Balekji gave Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James his flowers.
“To me, it’s him. He’s closed out the games. He’s made the spectacular plays they needed,” Balekji said. “He’s taken over as a leader.”
Balekji explained that when the other stars of the team, like Steph Curry, Jrue Holiday, Anthony Edwards or Anthony Davis, are having an off night, James can flip the switch and take over a game.
“Credit to him, he’s on the court with the best players in the world,” Balekji said. “… He’s the one that can flip the switch and have the night and just be him, and he’s done that.”
Campbell didn’t disagree with Balekji’s choice.
“That’s a fair take. Lebron has been the MVP,” Campbell said. “I don’t think there’s any spice in that take. I don’t think there’s any other take to be had honestly. He is the guy who started the game with a reverse dunk against Germany and he finished the game — bookend. Just because he’s LeBron James … that’s what he does.”
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has knocked down 73 points, added 19 assists and collected 20 rebounds.
Campbell added that while its known USA will score points with its talented roster, Davis has stepped up defensively.
“He’s anchoring their defense by leading them in rebounds, blocks and steals,” Campbell said. “What else can you ask for? LeBron’s covering all the other categories. But, as far as defense, Anthony Davis has been doing that, and that’s what Team USA needs.”
