Mets Triumph Over Yankees in Tight 3-2 Victory

The Mets (52-48) brought down the cross-town rival Yankees (60-43) on Tuesday evening in the Bronx. In a tight matchup, the Mets notched eight hits and left the bases loaded twice but came out on top with a 3-2 win, backed by strong pitching from Jose Quintana and a clutch save from Jake Diekman. The win marks the Mets’ third against the Yankees this year as they look to sweep the season series tomorrow. The Mets are now a season-high four games over .500 and have won 19 of their last 31 games against the Yankees.

(Box Score)

Jose Quintana got the start for Queens, earning the win and improving his ERA to 4.02 on the season. He allowed just one run on three hits over five innings pitched, walking five and striking out six.

The Yankees took an early 1-0 lead on a Gleyber Torres homer in the second inning. The Mets tied it up in the third, following three consecutive singles from Jeff McNeil, Luis Torrens, and Tyrone Taylor. Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch to walk in a run, but with one out, the club couldn’t capitalize and stranded runners on all bases.

The Mets took a 3-1 lead in the sixth after Pete Alonso smoked his 23rd double of the year to lead off the inning, and Jeff McNeil knocked a two-run homer. It was McNeil’s ninth of the year and fourth since the All-Star break.

Adam Ottavino took over on the mound in the sixth, giving up a run to cut the Mets’ lead. He allowed a leadoff single to Anthony Volpe and an RBI double to Alex Verdugo before being lifted. Alex Young, in his Mets debut, took over to get the last two outs of the inning.

Dedniel Nuñez tossed a scoreless seventh for Queens. The Mets extended their lead in the eighth with a Mark Vientos RBI double that drove in Alonso, who had reached via a single. The club loaded the bases but stranded them for the second time after back-to-back strikeouts from Luis Torrens and Tyrone Taylor.

Phil Maton tossed a scoreless eighth for the Mets. Jake Diekman entered to close it out in a one-run game in the ninth. He walked Juan Soto on four pitches with one out to put the tying run on base. Until then, the Mets pitched around Judge—walking him four times in the game. Diekman stepped up to the occasion, striking out Judge and getting the final out to solidify the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Jake Diekman earns Tuesday’s honor with the save to seal the win and a clutch strikeout of Aaron Judge. It was his fourth save of the year.
