PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The northern lights are on the move and some locations across the Pacific Northwest have the chance to see the aurora early Wednesday morning.
The chance to see the dancing lights in the night sky will be from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Pacific Northwest. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning chances won't likely stand up to the event of May 2024. That's where northern lights could be seen across the Portland, Vancouver area.
The best chance to see the northern lights will be along the northern horizon here in northwestern Oregon and southwest Washington. The best chance to see the northern lights will be in far northeast Washington, but they won't be as vibrant as what was seen in May. The likelihood of seeing the lights in the Portland, Vancouver metro area is next to none due to pollution.
Rural northern locations will have the best chance to see the lights. This chance comes as the geomagnetic activity level measured in Kp is expected to peak at 5.67. In comparison, the Kp level was at seven when the lights were visible and vibrant across the Pacific Northwest on May 13, 2024.
