The 2024 Irish Summer Youth and Senior Championships got underway today in the National Aquatic Centre on the Sport Ireland Campus, a venue that just hosted the holding camp for the Paris 2024 Olympians, all of whom set off to France earlier today.

The Men 800m Freestyle was one of the first medal opportunities today with Tadgh O’Brien (Dolphin) topped the podium in the 15yrs event, clocking 8:38.41 on his way to gold. Dylan Brady (Drogheda) was next home in 9:04.42 in silver with bronze going to Templeogue’s Dylan Ryan (9:04.67). Ards’ Ben Wilson was first home in the 16yrs event in a time of 8:42.69 to claim the national gold. Kilkenny man Paddy Cuddihy was next home in 8:50.36, third went to Daniel Egan (Aer Lingus) in 8:54.98.

Fresh off the back of the European Open Water Junior Championships, National Centre Limerick’s Denis O’Brien went 8:33.85 to win the 17yrs gold. Daragh Horgan was next to touch in 8:35.11, while Kyle Kelly (Longford) went 8:56.23 in third.

Sean Bugler brought the 18yrs gold home to Cork as the Sundays Well swimmer went 8:42.82 on his way to top spot on the podium. Ennis man Ferdia Hayes went 9:16.59 to claim silver, while bronze went to Aleksandr McAleer (9:19.64) of Galway. In the 19yrs, Aer Lingus man Ben Moran was first home in 8:45.97 to claim the national gold. Ronan Fahey of Trojan was next to stop the clock and pick up silver in 8:50.17, while bronze went to Moran’s teammate David Coyle (9:01.69).

The Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay did not have far to travel as a Coolmine quartet of Ali Rayan, Danny Morgan, Darragh Morgan and Killian O’Loughlin Brophy clocked 3:32.24 to win gold. NAC finished closely behind in combined 3:33.01, while Limerick finished just behind in third (3:33.02).

Trojan topped the podium in the Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay as Alice Ledgerwood, Sofia O’Neill, Rachel Marshall and Abril Allende clocked a combined 4:01.86 to claim the relay gold. Sundays Well were next home in second (4:02.14) with bronze going to Templeogue in 4:06.89.

In the Women’s 200m Butterfly, Georgina Walker of Banbridge went 2:30.57 to claim the 15yrs national gold medal, her teammate Tara Kennedy was next to touch the wall in 2:33.60 to pick up silver with third going to Elin Manson (2:34.17) of Dolphin. Hannah Poynton (Trojan) and Emilee Edgar (Lisburn) went stroke for stroke to claim joint gold in the 16yrs with a time of 2:28.74. Sophie Jess of Bangor claimed third in a time of 2:36.90.

Eva Bayley (New Ross) was crowned national champion in the 17yrs in a time of 2:24.81, silver went to Hannah Mulloy (Trojan) in 2:29.77, with third going to Grace Cochrane (2:31.98) of Banbridge. In the 18+yrs, Banbridge swimmer Alana Burns-Atkin was top of the podium after she clocked 2:20.12. Ballymena’s Eva Bailey went 2:24.65 to pick up silver with bronze going to Toni Jamison (2:26.21) of Lisburn.

In the Men’s 400m Medley, Phelim Hanley brought the 15yrs gold back across Dublin as the Blackrock swimmer clocked 4:50.86 on his way to the top spot on the podium. Longford’s Scott Duda was next to touch the wall (4:57.40) with third and bronze going to Dylan Brady (5:00.96) of Drogheda. In the 16yrs, Ian Middleton (Glenalbyn) was first home in a time of 4:45.45 to win national gold with silver going to Cody Lua (Ballymena) in 4:51.92, third and bronze went to Ards’ Mathias Pickett (4:50.11).

Dominic Hilton (Trojan) went 4:43.21 to be crowned champion in the 17yrs, Artem Chobot (Titan) was next to touch (4:45.86) in silver, while third went to Cormac Farren (Bangor) in 4:55.34. The 18yrs gold went to Tom Wilkinson of Ballina Dolphins in 4:32.14, silver was claimed by New Ross’ Emmet Cousins (4:42.33), national bronze went to Coolmine’s Killian O’Loughlin Brophy (4:45.95).

The Women’s 200m Freestyle was next on the schedule with the 15yrs up first. Lexi Dunne of Dolphin was first to stop the clock in a time of 2:09.73. Finishing closely behind was Hannah Coady of St. Fiacc’s in a time of 2:09.87, while in third was Lucy O’Brien (2:10.33) of Limerick. Templeogue’s Holly McInerney topped the podium in the 16yrs in a time of 2:09.79, finishing closely behind was McInerney’s teammate Ava Rock (2:10.30) in second, Eva Hand of Bangor picked up bronze.

Trident’s Clara Doherty topped the podium in the 17yrs with 2:11.78, Antonina Sech (Sundays Well) was next up on the podium, third went to Clodagh Glennon of Curragh. In the 18yrs+, Irish international, Lottie Cullen (National Centre Ulster) went 2:05.24 to pick up the national gold. Naomi Trait (UCD) went 2:05.69 in second with bronze going to National Centre (Ulster) swimmer Mollie McAlorum in 2:05.89.

In the Men’s 200m Freestyle, Tadgh O’Brien was first home in the 15yrs event to pick up the national title with 1:57.70. Blackrock’s Phelim Hanley was next to touch and claim silver in 1:59.28, bronze going to John Rada (2:00.44) of Banbridge. The 16yrs was a closely contested affair with Aer Lingus’ Daniel Egan going a flat 2 minutes to win the national gold. Longford’s Ashley Weafer finished closely behind (2:00.08) with Rudi Lacy (ESB) in third with 2:00.39.

In the 18yrs, there was a Coolmine one-two as Killian O’Loughlin Brophy (1:55.70) and Darragh Morgan (1:57.67) finished first and second, respectively. Ennis swimmer Sean O’Connor was next home in 1:58.09 to pick up bronze. Sean Donnellan of Glenalbyn went 1:55.07 to win the national title in the 19yrs and over. John Shortt (National Centre Limerick) was next home with 1:55.99, third went to Dolphin’s Noah Switzer (1:56.16).

Lucy O’Brien topped the podium in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke 15yrs race with a time of 1:17.19. Enniskillen’s Ellie Dunlop was next home to pick up silver in 1:17.29, third going to Samanatha Burns-Atkin (1:17.67) of Banbridge. Recent European Junior international Ava Jones (Portmarnock) was first home in the 16yrs in 1:11.40 to pick up the national gold. Fellow European Junior teammate Niamh Connery was next to stop the clock (1:11.79), claiming silver, bronze went to Abril Allende of Trojan.

Ellie Campbell topped the podium in the 17yrs race with a time of 1:15.10, next on the podium was Ards’ Megan Diamond (1:15.66), third going to Lousie Harnett of Laois Marlins. National Centre Limerick’s Ellie McCartney was crowned national champion in the 18+ gold race in a time of 1:09.51. Portmarnock’s Megan Jones was next home in second, third went to Isabel Kidney of Sunday Wells.

The Men’s 100m Breaststroke closed out day one of competition as the 15yrs took to the blocks first. Ballina Dolphin’s swimmer Mark Conroy was first home (1:10.08), silver and bronze went to Trojan duo Beau McCabe (1:10.79) and Emilian Petrea (1:11.29), respectively. In the 16yrs, Alan Karchenko (Banbridge) went 1:09.07 to claim gold with silver going to Jamie Lennon of Longford, bronze was claimed by David O’Leary of Sundays Well.

Athlone swimmer Christian O’Brien picked up the national gold in the 17yrs race going 1:06.38, Sasha Lychuk (Dolphin) was next home in second while Dominic Hilton touched the wall in third. In the 18yrs, Senan Harvey was first home to pick up the national title, while silver went to Zach Moyo of Swim Belfast, Trojan’s Dominic Hilton claimed bronze.

The final race of the night was a titanic battle as Bangor’s Lachey Reed Bangor went 1:03.34 to pip Tuam man Uiseann Cooke (1:03.40) to the national gold. Andrew Feenan was next home in 1:03.40 to pick up bronze.
