Yoan Moncada was aiming toward a return to the White Sox lineup in late July, however, it appears that may no longer be possible.
On Monday, Daryl Van Scouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Yoan Moncada’s rehab was halted. According to White Sox manager Pedro Grifol, the decision was made after “some anticipated soreness.” However, he added that the team does not view it as a setback.
“Even though you’re healed, it still feels similar to what it felt like when it first happened, but it’s not,” Grfiol told reporters on Monday. “It’s almost like he wants to be sure he’s got no pain. Anticpating stuff, that’s kind of what that last thing is, just anticipating soreness but we want to err on the side of caution.”
Moncada returned from his rehab assignment over the weekend and was further evaluated. After the evaluation, the team decided to pump the breaks on his return.
Moncada began his rehab stint in early July with the White Sox Arizona Complex League team. According to MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, Moncada did not seem comfortable with where he was physically. In five games with the Arizona Complex League White Sox, the switch-hitting infielder had gone 8-for-15 in 15 games.
The 29-year-old has been on the injured list since April 9th after suffering a left hip adductor strain while running the bases in Cleveland. He was placed on the 10-IL when the team announced that he was expected to miss three to six months.
The injury occurred the same day Grifol told reporters that Moncada was nursing a nagging hip injury. However, Moncada was doing his best to stay on the field and help a depleted White Sox lineup. Even with the hip issue Moncada still tried to hustle out of the box and leg out an infield single which ultimately caused him to go down. Before the injury, he was one of the few bright spots in the White Sox lineup, hitting .282 with a .774 OPS.
