The Minnesota HBPA started the tradition several years ago of honoring weekly a groom that exemplifies the trade. Grooms are the backbone of racing, caring for the equine athletes. Much of their work goes unseen and largely unappreciated by the general public. Grooms are hands-on daily with the horses and a good groom makes a huge difference for a successful trainer.
This week the Minnesota HBPA honors Tonya Williams. She will be recognized Thursday following race one in a winner’s circle presentation.
Tonya does all the legwork for trainer Ed Kereluk, feeding, tacking and tracking the horses. Even more impressive she has been with Ed’s barn for over eight years!
Ed says that Tonya doesn’t stop working until the job is done right. She never cuts corners with her horses. But it’s not just horses that Tonya loves; she also has her dog Hyena, who is a friendly, constant presence at the barn.
Congratulations to Tonya Williams, the Minnesota HBPA Groom of the Week.
A groom will be recognized each Thursday during the meet and will receive gifts from the Minnesota HBPA, and sponsors Bravis Craft Mexican Kitchen and Luro Boots.
