Great Britain Senior Men fell short against South Sudan, 81-84, in the Subway Summer Slam exhibition on Thursday evening at the Copper Box Arena.
Carl Wheatle brought Great Britain to a one point deficit on a three-pointer with seven seconds left in the game, however, Marial Shayok iced the game from the charity stripe for South Sudan before Shayok once again came up clutch for his side with a block on Jelani Watson Gayle’s three-point attempt in the dying seconds securing the win for his team.
Myles Hesson put up a monster performance scoring a game-high 28 points, he added seven rebounds, six assists, five steals and two blocks but the all-around performance that was not enough for GB to defeat South Sudan.
The exhibition game marked the return of GB legend, Luol Deng as South Sudan’s Federation President in full circle moment, as he was honoured at half time by his former teammates Dan Clark and Kieron Achara, who now work for the British Basketball Federation.
“Overall, we can be happy with the performance,” said GB captain Carl Wheatle following the game.
“We showed great heart to fight back there in the fourth quarter. We’re really happy with how we fought and how we showed spirit.
“We came up a little short, but we will be better going forward.”
Dan Akin put up a big performance, scoring 21 points shooting 9-of-11 from the field. GB captain, Carl Wheatle had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Marial Shayok led South Sudan with team-high 27 points.
