Notable conservatives reacted to President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and immediately endorse Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday afternoon.
Common refrains among the right included calls for Biden to resign, citing his apparent unfitness to serve, and allegations that the Democratic Party’s nomination process was undemocratic.
“At this unprecedented juncture in American history, we must be clear about what just happened,” wrote House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, on X (formerly Twitter). “The Democrat Party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.”
Biden has been the presumptive Democratic nominee since March, when he had notched landslide victories in his party’s primary contests. The official Democratic nominee will be chosen next month at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite,” Johnson went on:
The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history. She has known for as long as anyone of his incapacity to serve.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” the House Speaker emphasized. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
In an X post, radio host and Outkick founder Clay Travis appeared to suggest that Biden dropping out at the behest of many notable Democrats was not a “democratic” decision after all.
“Anyone still arguing Trump is a threat to democracy is a joke,” Travis wrote:
Democrats just wiped out their entire primary system to replace their candidate with roughly 3,000 party elites voting. The will of their primary voters didn’t matter at all. They staged an actual insurrection.
The Daily Wire host Matt Walsh, a Catholic, wrote that “[e]very Republican needs to go on the record right now calling for Biden to be immediately removed from office.”
“If [Biden] is not competent to run for re-election then he is not competent to remain in the White House,” Walsh stressed.
Walsh’s Daily Wire colleague Michael Knowles harkened back to the fateful June 27 debate between Biden and Trump – in which Biden’s poor performances began the widespread calls among Democrats for him to drop out.
“Trump won that debate so decisively that his opponent, the president, isn’t even running for president anymore,” wrote Knowles, who is also a Catholic.
A day before Biden announced he was dropping out, Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance, R-OH, stated that if Biden was going to end his campaign, he must also resign as president.
“Everyone calling on Joe Biden to *stop running* without also calling on him to resign the presidency is engaged in an absurd level of cynicism,” Vance wrote on X Saturday. “If you can’t run, you can’t serve. He should resign now.”
On Sunday morning – hours before Biden dropped out – Vance followed up his post, writing:
If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President?
Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief.
“There is no middle ground,” emphasized the vice presidential hopeful.
