A group representing the missing persons has called on EU MP Fidias Panayiotou to apologise to them on Monday, after they accused him of “mocking and disrespecting” them in a request they filed with his office.
According to the group’s statement, they sought the support of Panayiotou in organising an event about the Missing in Cyprus, to publicise the issue.
The group added that ten of the children with a missing relative, their fathers, from the Turkish invasion had asked for help in organising the event.
However, they charged that they were met with mockery and disrespect from the MEP.
“Instead of understanding, they were insulted, since the MEP not only refused, but attacked them with phrases such as ‘you think highly of yourselves’, ‘I have an uncle who is missing, but I don’t do that’.”
The group claimed that he also said: “It’s not only you girl who is an orphan.”
“We are awaiting an apology to every mother, spouse, brother/sister and child who have someone missing.”
