Police are investigating a 22-year-old who was reported for stealing from a beach in Famagusta on Saturday night who was caught in the act by a beach goer.
According to police, the 22-year-old was caught by someone on the beach as he was trying to steal something from a bag belonging to another two people on the beach in Paralimni.
At around 8.30pm, a 46-year-old tourist saw a man looking in his bag on the beach and interrupted him.
The case was reported to the police who came to the beach and located the two men.
During examinations that followed police found a purse containing €234 and a gold chain in the possession of the younger man.
As he could not explain where they came from, police arrested the 22-year-old.
A bag on the beach that was reportedly in the possession of the 22-year-old when the 46-year-old found him was also given to the police.
In the bag were two mobile phones, a pair of sunglasses and a watch which along with the purse was later identified as having been stolen from the same beach earlier in the day.
The identification of the stolen items happened after two incidents of theft were reported on Saturday evening.
A 46-year-old man reported his bag had been stolen with his phone, sunglasses, watch and €200, while a second man, also 46, reported his mobile phone, a purse and €42 had been stolen.
