J.D. Power has released this year's North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study, highlighting the top hotels in North America and revealing a new travel trend that is being seen.
Troy, Michigan (WJET/WFXP) — J.D. Power has released this year's North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index (NAGSI) Study, highlighting the top hotels in North America and revealing a new travel trend that is being seen.
The annual study, now in its 28th year, begins the previous year with results released in July of the following year. The study aims to measure guest satisfaction with the entire hotel stay experience, from pre-stay communication to check-out.
The study breaks down the hotels into 9 segments: Luxury, Upper Upscale, Upscale, Upscale Extended Stay, Upper Midscale, Upper Midscale/Midscale Extended Stay, Midscale, Economy, and Economy Extended Stay.
The study revealed that Americans have been traveling less, but staying in one location for longer. North American guests are taking an average of 9 trips, which is down from 10 in 2023. Guests are now also staying an average of 3.43 days, compared to 3.36 days in 2023.
The study also found that overall satisfaction is steadily increasing for luxury and upscale hotels even though these rooms have seen the sharpest increases in average room rates. On the other side, the remaining segments have all seen a significant decrease year over year.
The study surveyed around 40,000 hotel guests between May 2023 and May 2024. The guests were asked to rate their stay based on the following factors: Communications & Connectivity, Food & Beverage, Guest Room, Hotel Facility, Staff Service, and Value for Price. The survey and results are based on a 1,000-point scale.
The top hotels for each segment are as follows

The Luxury Collection, A Marriott Bonvoy brand, came out on top against other Luxury Hotels with an overall satisfaction of 772. The Luxury Collection has hotels around the world and if you're planning to stay at one, you can average prices range from $300 to a few thousand dollars a night.
Margaritaville Hotels & Resorts beat out the Kimpton by just 4 points. keeping its top spot for the second year in a row.
The element hotels, which is A Marriott Bonvoy brand, ranks as the best upscale hotel, with a satisfaction rating of 707.
While Hyatt Place was 5th overall for Upscale Hotels, it is the top hotel for upscale extended-stay hotels for a third year in a row, with a rating of 696.
Drury Hotels swept the competition in this category, beating out the second-place hotel by over 60 points, seeing a ranting of 744.
For a second year in a row, Home2 Suites by Hilton is the top hotel for Upper Midscale and Midscale Extended Stay with a rating of 695.
For Midscale Hotels, another hotel that has secured its second year in a row with the highest rank, is Tru by Hilton seeing a score of 688.
Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham, for a second year in a row, secures the top spot with a rating of 618.
Finally, for the second consecutive year, WoodSpring Suites is the top Extended Stay Economy hotel with a rating of 603.
