Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou are busy at work planning for the season ahead, and thee Spurs boss has now commented on reports linking him with the vacant England managerial position.
Gareth Southgate left his post as England manager this week after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain on Sunday night.
After eight years, two European Championship finals and one World Cup semi-final, Southgate decided he had took the Three Lions as far as he could and the FA must now find a replacement.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Postecoglou is being considered as the man to fill Southgate’s shoes, and he’s been on the radar of the FA for some time.
Postecoglou was said to “expected to be on the list of candidates” the FA are looking at this time around, and it was also reported that he “has been tracked… for years.”
John McDermott, the technical director of the FA, has “followed Postecoglou’s career closely” and is thought to be an “admirer of his work” across Australia, Asia, Scotland, and now in the Premier League.
An initial shortlist is now being put together for the England job, with Under-21 manager, Lee Carlsey, believed to be the frontrunner at this stage.
The idea of appointing an interim manager is something the FA are “relaxed” about as they are “prepared to wait for the right candidate”.
Postecoglou was asked about the speculation following Tottenham’s 5-1 win at Hearts this evening and was quick to clear exactly where his loyalty lies.
He told Football.London: “I was having a nap this afternoon. I have no idea. I’m the Tottenham manager and I’m determined to bring success to this club. That’s where my focus is totally.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s easy to see why England would want Postecoglou, but I don’t think there’s any chance he would walk away from Spurs anytime soon. I can see Postecoglou staying at Spurs for at least another two years, and the FA would not be waiting that long for someone.
Postecoglou has only been at Tottenham for one year, and speculation linking him to the Liverpool job earlier this summer was brushed off by the club and the man himself.
It was refreshing to hear him quickly pour cold water on the prospect of him succeeding Gareth Southgate.
