Treating malnutrition in Afghanistan amid lack of financial and healthcare access

Doctors Without Borders, in its latest report on the severity of the economic situation and lack of access to healthcare services in Afghanistan, has highlighted that the primary causes of malnutrition in the country persist.

The organization stated in a report released yesterday, Tuesday, July 16th, that the underlying causes of malnutrition in Afghanistan continue unabated as Afghans struggle to access primary care and urgent medical services.

The “Money Shortage and Food Scarcity” report reveals that Doctors Without Borders clinics in Afghanistan often receive patients who have traveled long distances to access medical care.

Doctors Without Borders further added that during the first four months of this solar year, the number of malnourished children treated at their facilities in Afghanistan has increased by 5% compared to the same period last year.

The economic situation of the people in Afghanistan has been described as “severe,” exacerbated by the severity of this situation, causing many who previously could afford care at private clinics to now rely on health centers supported by international organizations.

Pregnant women and lactating mothers are severely affected by the dire economic conditions. The report adds that breastfeeding mothers under current conditions are unable to produce sufficient milk for their children, leading to an increase in cases of malnutrition among children.

In addition, the situation in Afghanistan remains critical, with ongoing challenges in accessing healthcare and addressing malnutrition exacerbated by severe economic conditions. International support and urgent interventions are crucial to mitigate the suffering and improve health outcomes for the people of Afghanistan.
