Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala is on the verge of joining Villarreal on a permanent transfer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 19-year-old made his breakthrough with the Red Devils in December last year following a string of injuries in the central defensive department.
He ended up making 10 appearances over the campaign where he impressed with his distribution, aerial presence and ability to clear his lines.
Kambwala recently entered the final year of his contract and Romano has revealed that Villarreal are about to sign him for around £8.4 million.
The United graduate showed plenty of promise with his limited playing time, but it was quite clear that he would not become a regular anytime soon.
The club parted ways with Raphael Varane on a free transfer this month, but they are about to land an upgrade in the form of Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.
The Red Devils are also working on signing another young centre-back. The club have had an offer accepted for Lille’s Leny Yoro and are waiting for the player’s response.
The hierarchy are also locked in negotiations with Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite. Keeping this in mind, we are not surprised by the club’s decision to part ways with Kambwala.
The teenager will now have the guarantee of regular game time at Villarreal which is essential for his development. We should get more details on the transfer in the coming hours.
United would surely have negotiated a big sell-on clause as part of the deal. The Red Devils already have the option to re-sign Kambwala with a buy-back clause in coming seasons.
