OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - A 5-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the leg around 7 a.m. Friday morning in northwest Oklahoma City. Police said his younger brother pulled the trigger.
Investigators could be seen at a home near NW Expressway and Council Road trying to piece together the details.
"A four-year-old child who had gotten a hold of a gun that had been left laying out, for whatever reason, accidentally fired the gun, striking his sibling, five year old sibling, hit him in the leg with the gunshot,” Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department said.
The 5-year-old was rushed from his home to the hospital where he is expected to survive.
"It's too early to know exactly what is going to come of it,” Knight said.
Details as to why the gun was so easily accessible to the child and where the parents were at the time are unclear as police continue their investigation. Neighbors told KFOR off camera that the people who live in the home have never been a problem and they usually see the kids playing in the yard.
This situation comes almost two weeks after another accidental shooting on July 1. A 4-year-old child was accidentally shot by their sibling in northeast Oklahoma City in that incident. That child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
"It's never a good idea to leave a firearm laying around where a child can find it because children don't always understand the dangers involved in firearms and we end up with accidental shootings like this,” Knight said.
It’s too early to tell what or if any charges will be brought against the parents.
