Ever since it was announced that “Shōgun” would be competing at the Emmys as a continuing drama series instead of as a limited series, it has been climbing in our Emmy odds — not just in one category, but in several. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, the FX historical series is now the front-runner to win Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai and Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada. Do you agree that Sanada now has a better chance of taking home the trophy than former favorite Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses“)?
Sanada now gets leading odds of 4/1 for his performance as Yoshii Toranaga, who is fighting to outmaneuver his fellow feudal lords in a life-or-death battle for power. He’s predicted to win by nine out of 16 Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, as well as nine out of 11 Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round. Out of our Top 24 Users, 18 are betting on Sanada. And among our All-Star Top 24, there are 16 who give Sanada the edge.
But it’s not guaranteed for Sanada by any means. Oscar winner Oldman still has support from six Experts, one Editor, four Top Users and six All-Stars. However, one key difference between “Shōgun” and “Slow Horses” is that the latter series has already been tested at the Emmys; it was eligible in 2022 and 2023 and didn’t receive a single nomination. However, none of the Best Drama Actor nominees from 2022 or 2023 are eligible to return in 2024, because their shows either ended or are on hiatus, which makes this the best chance yet for Apple TV+’s spy drama. But it’s also an opportunity for a new show like “Shōgun” to flex its muscle, if it proves as popular with voters as our users generally think it will. We’ll get a much better idea of the state of the race once nominations are announced July 17.
