The Rapidan Dam near Mankato drew a national spotlight to what is a common problem in Minnesota: old and creaky dams that are costly to fix, replace or remove. There have been 26 failures large and small of dam structures between 2010 and 2023, and the state has a list of 73 dams in need of $33 million in work.
