Due to hamstring injuries, Boston Red Sox infielder Vaughn Grissom has missed over half of the season, limited to just 23 games.
Grissom suffered a hamstring strain during the winter, then another one to start June. While he has missed a majority of the 2024 season, Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes Grissom could be trending in a positive direction.
On Thursday, Cora told reporters that Boston had a meeting with the infielder and there is no set time for his return. Despite there being no timetable, Grissom is “staying the course’ and could have a rehab assignment soon.
During the offseason, the 23-year-old played with Cangrejeros de Santurce in the Puerto Rican Winter League where, according to Cora, he was not 100%. A month into his stint in Puerto Rico, he was moved to the Red Sox.
So far, he’s hit just .148, going 12-for-81 with a single extra-base hit and three RBIs. On the defensive side of the diamond, Grissom looked like a promising starting second baseman for the Red Sox, but injuries hurt him.
While his start in Boston has not been ideal, Cora thinks there is more in the future to see from Grissom.
“I don’t think what we saw is the real Vaughn Grissom. I think there’s more there,” Cora told reporters, per the Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr.
In 2023 with the Atlanta Braves, Grissom played 23 games, batting .280 with nine RBIs and a .313 on-base percentage. Then in 2022, he played 41 games with them and batted .291.
There seems to be a lot of promise in Grissom for when he recovers back to full health, which could be exciting to watch in the future.
