Since “Big Little Lies,” Emmy and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman has become the undisputed queen of limited series adaptations of best-selling beach reads. Now, she’s back in the genre with “The Perfect Couple,” her first limited series for Netflix — and her first adaptation of a novel by the queen of beach reads, Elin Hilderbrand. Netflix released a teaser trailer for the six-episode limited series on Thursday, along with a link to a thematically appropriate Zola-esque wedding website.
Based on Hilderbrand’s 2018 murder mystery, “The Perfect Couple” is a story about wealth, power, and family. Here’s how Netflix describes it: “Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman), has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.”
In addition to Kidman and Hewson (“Behind Her Eyes”), the cast includes Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”), Billy Howle (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Jack Reynor (“Midsommar”), Ishaan Khatter (“A Suitable Boy”), Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”), Sam Nivola (“Maestro”), Michael Beach (“Dahmer — Monster”), Donna Lynne Champlin (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), and Mia Isaac (“Black Cake”), with Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”) and Isabelle Adjani (“Possession”).
The series reunites Kidman with “The Undoing” director Susanne Bier (who also directed “Bird Box,” one of Netflix’s biggest movies ever). Jenna Lamia (“Good Girls”) is the writer and showrunner. Other executive producers include Hilderbrand, Shawn Levy, Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady, Per Saari, and Josh Barry.
Kidman can currently be seen in the Netflix romantic comedy film “A Family Affair” with Zac Efron and Joey King.
“The Perfect Couple” premieres on Netflix on Sept. 5.
