Belated congratulations to Huma Abedin and Alex Soros, who announced their engagement on Wednesday. According to “Page Six,” the 38-year-old billionaire heir to the George Soros fortune popped the question to Hillary Clinton’s famously private former deputy chief of staff six weeks ago, and the two are now celebrating in Italy.
“This happened … we couldn’t be happier, more grateful, or more in love,” Soros wrote in a post on Instagram, where Lauren Sanchez, Dasha Zhukova, Jenna Lyons, Olivia Palermo, Scooter Braun, and more flooded the comments with congratulations.
Abedin and Soros first went public with their relationship back in February, after Soros posted a Valentine’s Day Instagram Story of himself and Abedin sitting at a Parisian restaurant with roses on the table. Since then, the duo have kept a low profile with a handful of public appearances, including sitting courtside together at a Knicks game (the de facto hard launch) and attending the Met Gala together in May.
Abedin was previously married to disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting a minor in 2017, the same year Abedin filed for divorce. She was rumored to be linked to Bradley Cooper in 2022 after a reported Anna Wintour setup. Soros, meanwhile, is a philanthropist and investor who manages the Soros Family Foundation and the Open Society Foundations, a nonprofit that supports global democracies and human rights. George Soros — who donated over $8 million to the Clinton campaign that Abedin vice-chaired in 2016 — named Alex the successor to his $25 billion empire last year. In a 2023 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Alex Soros said he planned to continue using family money to support liberal politicians as well as support causes such as voting and abortion rights.
“The best way I can describe the relationship is effortless,” a longtime friend of Abedin’s told “Page Six” after the engagement. “After a lot of tumultuous years for Huma, she’s relaxed and happy and in love.” Very happy for Huma, and grateful for this sweet tidbit of Democratic Party news. We needed it.
