Visitors to Las Vegas have flocked to the Mirage hotel and casino for decades to gamble their money at the various machines and tables. The iconic establishment is closing its doors for good on July 17, but before then, it has to get rid of $1.6 million fast.
According to ABC7, the money is from unclaimed progressive jackpots from slot machines and table games. Per Nevada state law, because progressive jackpots are made up almost entirely of gamblers' losses, and Mirage's owner and operator Hard Rock has no other casinos in the state, the money must be paid out before the casino can legally close.
If you're in Las Vegas in the next week, you might be able to make your lucky day at the casinos even luckier. The Mirage will be giving away slot machine progressive jackpots totaling $1.2 million, starting with a guaranteed $200,000 each day from July 9 through 11, then increasing to $250,000 on July 12 and 13. $100,000 will be given away on July 16.
As for the remaining $400,000 in table game jackpots, the casino plans to hold separate giveaways for the cash.
The Progressive Finale Cash Giveaway ends July 16 before the Mirage goes dark forever the following day. It will eventually receive new life as a revamped Hard Rock Hotel & Casino set to open in 2027.
