Following recent assaults and document checks on non-local labourers in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that four cases have been registered by the police. Sangma clarified that while there is no work permit system, there is mandatory registration with the Labour Department for migrant workers, which contractors must ensure. He emphasized that unauthorized individuals or organizations checking papers are violating the law. The state government is pursuing the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and is awaiting central approval. The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission is investigating the July 9 assault on labourers at JN Stadium.
