ReHousing has announced that its website resource, ReHousing.ca has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Housing Supply Level-Up Challenge.
The Housing Supply Challenge seeks to recognize and encourage initiatives with the potential to address Canada’s housing crisis by increasing supply and improving the efficiency of new housing creation.
ReHousing is one of 20 semi-finalist projects selected by an expert jury from over 250 nationwide initiatives. The semi-finalists each earn $1 million as well as professional mentorship and support before going on to compete for $3 million and $5 million prizes in the second and third stages of the competition.
In February, ReHousing was awarded the President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing Research, which came with a prize of $25,000. As a result, this recognition marks ReHousing’s second prize from the CMHC this year.
Created in a partnership between Daniels Faculty University of Toronto and LGA Architectural Partners, ReHousing is a how-to guide designed to empower “citizen developers,” which means people outside of the design and building industry, with an understanding of how to convert single family homes into multiplexes.
The website aims to synthesize the knowledge of academic and practicing professionals into accessible graphics and text.
The goal is to “democratize housing design and creation by focusing on the conversion of typical homes and standard designs that are plausible and accessible.”
With the CMHC support, ReHousing is now able to expand their Design Catalogue, which currently consists of high level, intuitive designs for converting the thirteen most common houses in Toronto, to other major cities across Canada.
RJH Architecture + Planning’s Infill Catalyst Program is also a semi-finalists in CMHC’s challenge. The initiative aims to assist cities in reviewing and revising regulations and investments to establish a viable business model for multi-unit infill housing. It identifies which areas can benefit from replicable and modular infill and how to catalyze developments that support the city’s goals.
EllisDon Community Builders’ Template design for affordable/supportive housing developments is another semi-finalist and is a project that provides a turnkey design, construction and financing solution specifically for affordable and supportive housing providers. It promotes cost and schedule certainty for multi-site projects in Canada.
The other semi-finalists include Tapestry Community Capital, One Bowl, BC Housing, UTILE, Alliance des corporations d’habitations abordables du territoire du Québec (ACHAT), Vancity Community Foundation, Mddl, Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN), Innovation Building Group Ltd., Association des groupes de ressources techniques du Québec (AGRTQ), Resimate Inc., Ratio.City, a division of Esri Canada, Serotiny Group, Flourish (Indwell) and Promise Robotics.
