“This year marks 50 years since the tragic events of 1974 in Cyprus that resulted in profound loss, widespread displacement and an ongoing division between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities,” say organisers of a new exhibition in Limassol. “In response to this significant anniversary, the Collective Personal exhibition opens its doors to the public, offering a unique space for reflection, understanding and dialogue.”
The Edit Gallery hosts a new group exhibition this summer which will run from July 12 to September 14. Titled Collective Personal, the showcase brings together a diverse group of artists whose works delve into the complex emotions and narratives stemming from Cyprus’ turbulent history. The exhibition captures the deep, unresolved wounds that continue to shape the collective psyche and identity of both communities. Through art, visitors are invited to contemplate how historical events influence present realities and how trauma is passed down through generations.
The exhibition provides a platform for emotional and intellectual exploration, gathering insights on memories, theories and perspectives about Cyprus’ past and future. It encourages visitors to reflect on the enduring impact of the division, the evolving social landscape, and the potential for a more inclusive Cypriot identity. By focusing on shared experiences and fostering empathy, Collective Personal aims to transcend entrenched divisions and cultivate a sense of unity and hope.
Curated by Mariandrie, the exhibition features works by Danae Patsalou, Fikos, Ibrahim Ince, Lefki Savvidou, Lia Lapithi, Nurtane Karagil, Nicolas Kyrillou, Yeti and the curator herself.
