Keeping up with the Rees-Moggs doesn't sound as tempting...
Former Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg is reportedly swapping politics for reality TV, with claims he’s landed a TV show about his life.
Following the likes of Nigel Farage on I’m A Celebrity and Matt Hancock on SAS: Who Dares Wins, it’s no surprise that he’s turning to television, with a source claiming the five-part documentary series is ‘being sold as the British version of the Kardashians’.
The Discovery+ series, said to be titled Meet The Moggs, will reportedly star his wife Helena and their six children.
This comes after the 55-year-old GB News presenter lost his seat as MP for North East Somerset to Labour’s Dan Norris.
An insider said: ‘Jacob and his family have been filming for the last couple of months but no one expected the General Election to be announced.
‘It was gold for the show however and gave a real insight into what family is like for working MPs.
‘His son Peter is really keen to make a name for himself in TV so he has been front and centre.’
The source added to The Sun: ‘Basically it’s being sold as the British version of the Kardashians and will be warts and all.’
It’s said the film crew are surprised by how much they like the former Tory MP, calling him ‘a total treat to work with’, despite his controversial views including being against abortion in all circumstances, arguing that ‘life begins at the point of conception’.
He also voted to repeal the human acts right twice during his time as an MP, and was a leading figure in the campaign to leave the EU.
Rees-Mogg shares children Peter Theodore Alphege, Mary Anne Charlotte Emma, Thomas Wentworth Somerset Denton, Anslem Charles Fitzwilliam, Alfred Wulfric Leyson Pius and Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher with wife Helena de Chair, who he married in 2007.
Rees-Mogg previously told The Mirror that he ‘loves having lots of children’, adding: ‘We have as many as possible, but as Helena does all the hard work I think six will be it.’
He added that it was ‘jolly hard work’ for the nanny.
His reported stint in reality TV comes after Strictly Come Dancing star Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who led election coverage on Channel 4, warned that politicians would be turning towards TV after the General Election.
He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I rather suspect there will be lots of politicians looking at reality TV shows this year, or politicians who are leaving for whatever reason, from all sides.
‘There’ll be politicians who lose their seats, and there’ll be politicians who are leaving politics who are looking for something to do and to make some money and to build some fame. I’m sure there’ll be all sorts of people looking at all sorts of reality shows.’
He did however add that he’d be ‘surprised’ if Strictly opts for a politician, saying: ‘The feeling I got when I was there was that they probably don’t want… I’m not sure politics is the right field for Saturday night entertainment right now, I’m not sure that’s how people feel about politics.
‘Who knows? Who knows who is going to be on that line-up? I’d be really surprised if there’s a big politician there.’
Referencing a very different reality show, he added: ‘I think I’m A Celebrity is much more of a political playground to be honest, because that’s about rivalry and arguments and all those sorts of constructed storylines, which they can do on I’m A Celebrity, so I think that’s much more of a likely place you’re going to see politicians.’
In his departing speech after losing his seat, Rees-Mogg said: ‘May I begin by giving my warmest congratulations to Dan Norris, who has been a servant of North East Somerset or Wansdyke as it then was before and I am sure will be a devoted constituency MP in the future.
‘And congratulate Sir Keir Starmer who has led his party to what seems to be a historic victory.
‘And this is the great virtue of our democracy, so I congratulate both of them.’
He had been accompanied by his eldest son Peter and wife Helena, and said, when asked about the state of the Conservative Party: ‘Aha. That’s a very good question.’
