Over 80 new laws taking effect for Oklahomans

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - The month of July marks dozens of new laws taking effect in Oklahoma.

First reported by the Southwest Ledger news, a total 5,433 bills were introduced by members of the state Senate and House of Representatives with a 16% approval rate of 870 bills being signed into law.

According to Southwest Ledger news Rep. Trey Caldwell (R-Lawton) and Sen. Jessica Garvin (R-Duncan) ranking among the top five bills sponsored. Rep. Trey Caldwell (R-Lawton) authored or co-sponsored 164 bills and Sen. Jessica Garvin (R-Duncan) authored or co-sponsored 245 proposed measures.

The state Senate is made up of 48 members and the state House of Representatives is the larger chamber with 101 members.

82 laws took effect on July 1st, here are highlights of those laws currently:

HB 3727 Requires that all third through fifth graders be taught to read and write in cursive. (Read Full Text

HB 3958 Requires any electronic communication between an individual student and school personnel to include a parent or guardian.

SB 1324 Requires that the Oklahoma State Department of Education offer a universal, electronic application to families to apply for free or reduced school meals.

SB 290 Increases pay for election inspectors as well as election judges and clerks. Inspectors will now make $225, up from $110. Judges and clerks will now earn $200, up from $100.

SB 11 Incarcerated individuals will not be allowed to receive state tuition assistance or grants until their incarceration is within five years of ending.

HB 4050 Religious degrees to be exempt from accreditation requirements as long as the diploma and transcripts have some sort of marker to indicate that. (Read Full Text)

SB 1521 Expands the eligibility for those wanting to serve as school resource officers to retired officers and CLEET-certified security guards. (Read Full Text)

SB 175 Requires each district’s board of education to adopt a policy regarding suicide awareness and training and requires staff training and the report of a student’s drug use.
