While many abandon city life during the summer to cool down by the sea or in the mountains, Nicosia’s cultural scene remains busy. So, for those of you staying in the capital city this month, there are still things to see, do and enjoy. Culture lovers of all ages can be entertained by the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia’s summer programme of events. Take your pick from exhibitions, guided tours and creative workshops for young visitors.
The temporary exhibition Three Photographic Trails – Nicosia: People and Places is currently presenting its Part 2, there are three parts in total, which focuses on photographic material from the 1950s until the early 1960s. A photographic archive shows how the city became Europeanised as it began to adopt new models in laying the foundations of its contemporary version. In this particular period, the significant political events brought many photographers and reporters to the island looking to capture the developments and the people of Cyprus in a mesh of unprecedented changes. Part 2 of the exhibition will run until August 25, open daily from 10am to 4.30pm, except Mondays.
To learn more about Nicosia and how the photographers of that period captured its changes, architecture and life, a guided exhibition tour will be held on July 11 at 6pm. The tour will be conducted by the curators of the exhibition, Director of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia Tzeni Lymperopoulou Savvidou and the museum’s Deputy Director Maria Patsalosavvi, held in Greek and for free.
As for young visitors, the museum invites them to a summer dive into Nicosia’s history. On July 19, the museum will host a creative workshop addressed to children aged 6 to 12, to discover Nicosia through its collections and tales. Children will learn cool facts about the capital city, such as that it was once part of the seabed! Following a museum tour, a creative workshop will follow where little ones will make summer artistic creations.
