When tater tots are involved in a dish, you know it’s going to be a hit. And Molly Yeh’s “Fri-Tot-Ta” is one such dish that will leave your family wanting more as soon as they’ve finished the first one. The entire thing is assembled in a braiser (except for the tots, which get baked in the oven), which makes this breakfast dish a quick and easy one to whip up for brunch or breakfast when you need to serve a crowd.
As you’d probably guess, this recipe starts with browning up some tots in the oven. Yeh suggests leaving them in for an extra 10 minutes past the package’s cooking instructions to ensure they’re extra crispy.
While the tots are baking away, you then heat your braiser and cook some cubed ham in oil until it’s also nice and crispy. With the ham in the braiser, you can whisk together about 10 eggs with some heavy cream, shredded gruyere and parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
“This will essentially be the glue that binds together the ham and the tots and all the good stuff,” Yeh says in a clip posted to the Food Network Instagram page.
Add your cooked tots to the braiser with the ham and then pour in the egg mixture, allowing everything to cook over medium-low heat so the bottom and the edges can set up and gain some structure. Yeh also likes to add ricotta cheese, as well as a bit more gruyere and parmesan to the top of the dish before transferring everything into the oven to finish cooking.
When the entire thing is hot and cooked all the way through, Yeh adds a bit of chopped parsley to the top and eats hers with a side of ketchup.
“This looks delicious I wish I could have some right now,” one person commented on the Food Network post. Another added, “Wow. Who’s hungry?”
