Looks like cerulean is coming back in style.
Producer Wendy Finerman and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna are said to be back at work developing a sequel to the dishy 2006 hit “The Devil Wears Prada.” A deal has not been formally announced, but a recent reuniting of the three main stars, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt at the SAG Awards earlier this year showed that the troika seemed eager to fan the flames of buzz for a long-rumored second film. Supposedly the new film checks in with Streep’s Miranda Priestly, who still runs the fashion magazine “Runway,” but now has to navigate a brave new world of online publishing, and, no doubt, social media influencers. Blunt’s Emily Charlton is now the head of a fashion brand that advertises with “Runway.” Whether Hathaway’s character winds up back in the mix is unclear, but the actress recently said she didn’t “think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen.”
The 2006 movie directed by David Frankel was based on a 2003 book by Lauren Weisberger and a thinly veiled account of her time working as an assistant to Anna Wintour. Weisberger has, indeed, published two sequels in the interim years, though it is unclear if this new project will take elements from those works.
The film was a major box office success, grossing $326 million (with a modest budget estimated at $35 to $40 million). A musical version, with songs by Elton John, just went up in London’s West End (timing!) with Vanessa Williams in the Priestly role.
Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for the part of Priestly, losing to Helen Mirren for “The Queen.” (It’s okay, Streep already had two Oscars.) Costume designer Patricia Field was also nominated for the Oscar. Hathaway would later go on to win an Oscar for “Les Miserables” and Blunt received her first nomination this year for “Oppenheimer.”
