‘This alone tells me’ – Nick Kyrgios fumes at BBC coverage of Wimbledon clash just hours before joining commentary team

NICK KYRGIOS slammed BBC commentator Andrew Castle just hours before joining him for their Wimbledon coverage.

Castle, 60, has fronted the Beeb’s broadcast at the All England Club for two decades.

But he was on the end of criticism from 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios, 29, on Monday.

Castle was commentating on Taylor Fritz’s five-set win over Alexander Zverev on Centre Court when he said: “You can’t say it’s been the most captivating tennis, to be frank.”

Australian Kyrgios, who has been a part of the broadcast for a number of matches at this year’s Wimbledon, took umbrage with those comments.

He tweeted: “‘Not captivating’ – was a comment from a commentator who is doing the Zverev & Fritz match.

“This alone tells me that they have probably never played tennis at a high level.

“Two of the most elite servers we have. Quite disrespectful. C’mon be better.”

Minutes later he went on to add: “Context. Tour serve quality 7.8.

“Zverev & Fritz both above 9. lol.”

It is not the first time Kyrgios has criticised Castle, a former British No1, for his comments.

Last year, Kyrgios commented on Castle during the men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, saying: “Whoever is the clown next to [Todd] Woodbridge in that commentator box needs to just not speak, spoiling the match big time.”

Castle reached the second round at Wimbledon in 1986 and 1987, while his best Grand Slam result came in 1987 when he made it to the third round of the US Open.

But he did enjoyed success in doubles, making it to the final of the 1987 Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios is continuing his recovery from a number of injury setbacks that have kept him out for the last year.
