SARATOGA (NEWS10) — With the fervor of the Belmont Festival now a fond memory, Saratoga Springs is primed to resume its bustling summer schedule. Todd Shimkus, spokesperson for the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, underscored the city's upcoming attractions, "We're gearing up for an incredible week ahead. The Saratoga Race Course kicks off its 40-day meet this Thursday, coinciding with the arrival of the renowned New York City Ballet."
Saratoga's status as the summer home of the New York City Ballet sets it apart. "We're the only community in the United States that can say that," Shimkus told NEWS10, "If you want to experience world-class ballet, Saratoga is the place to be".
The ballet extravaganza unfolds at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) from Tuesday through Saturday, featuring a lineup that includes 10 ballets across 7 performances. Chris Shiley, vice president of Artistic Planning at SPAC, highlighted the family-friendly nature of the programs, "From the timeless Swan Lake to the spirited Stars and Stripes, these ballets have delighted audiences for decades." Shiley also points out SPAC's commitment to inclusivity with special events like Family Night, where children 12 and under enjoy free admission.
We got a chance to go behind the scenes at the ballet and spoke with Norma Attride, steward of the ballet company's costumes for over 30 years. Her team ensures every detail is immaculate. "Everything is steamed, dress shields inserted, and costumes meticulously inspected for tears or missing embellishments," she explained. Her dedication ensures the dancers look flawless as they grace the SPAC stage.
As Saratoga Springs readies itself for another vibrant season of racing and ballet, residents and visitors alike anticipate a summer filled with the extraordinary. The Saratoga Race Course will host races until September 2nd, promising excitement both on and off the track. For aficionados of the arts, the New York City Ballet's residency at SPAC guarantees performances that will captivate audiences of all ages.
In Saratoga, where 'usual' is far from ordinary, the stage is set for yet another unforgettable summer season.
