Nearly 100 shot, 19 fatally, in Chicago Fourth of July weekend shootings

CHICAGO — Nearly 100 people were shot, 19 fatally, across Chicago between midnight on July 4 and midnight Monday.

Chicago police Supt. Larry Snelling and Mayor Brandon Johnson will address the holiday weekend violence at 9 a.m. Monday, which has surpassed last year's numbers.

The most recent shooting incident was a homicide around 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the Austin neighborhood.

Police responded to a well-being check in the 200 block of North Central Avenue and discovered a 36-year-old man on the kitchen floor. He was bleeding and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, three men were shot and wounded outside the University of Chicago Hospital in the 5700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.

According to police, witnesses observed someone in a dark-gray SUV point a gun from the vehicle and fire shots at several people standing near a parked car in what initially looks to be a targeted shooting. The victims were transported to the hospital.

Weekend shootings with multiple victims included an incident at Columbus Park in the 500 block of South Central Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. Police said two people exchanged gunfire and fled the scene. A total of seven people were shot.

A 40-year-old man died after driving himself to Stroger Hospital following the shooting.

The youngest shooting victim over the extended Fourth of July weekend was 8-year-old Bryson Orr, who was killed along with two female relatives in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Police said several people fired into a home in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn around 6 a.m. on July 4. Two other boys were also wounded in the shooting.

Additional officers were deployed over the extended holiday weekend across Chicago.
